Discovering Baler »

As with all books, it’s not important what writers have been through, but what the writers produce and it’s not important what the book looks like, beautiful as it is, but what it contains.”— Manuel L. Quezon III.

Baler takes the reader into a journey through the capital town of Aurora, a province situated between lush and formidable mountains, and a vast coastline opening to the Pacific.

The book describes in detail a town that has been witness, and sometimes casualty to, a rich and colorful history. Originally three miles closer to the shore, Baler was transferred to its present site after a tsunami in 1735 wiped off the original town, leaving only five surviving families: the Angaras, Bijasas, Bitongs, Carrascos, Lumasacs and Pobletes.

Here, the events behind the popular book, El Sitio de Baler showed the fortitude of Spanish soldiers during their yearlong standoff against the Katipuneros, and the gallantry of Filipinos in giving the retreating soldiers safe passage to Manila.

This invaluable piece of history, which almost every Spaniard grew up familiar with through songs and films, has ironically faded in the memories of Filipinos and even Aurorans.

Baler points out a similar irony between the prestige the town’s sons and daughters have achieved, in contrast to the remoteness the town still suffers from. Baler is home to prominent national leaders such as President Manuel Quezon— whose life and love are thoroughly discussed in the book—and Senator Edgardo Angara, as well as international renowned artists Jeho Bitanor and Maria Cruz.

Case of 4 Chinese cleared of drug raps clarified »

THE Bureau of Immigration yesterday spoke up on the case of four Chinese nationals who were ordered to legalize their stay in the country after being acquitted of drug charges.

In an interview, lawyer Bienvenido Chy, BI legal division chief, explained the dismissal of the deportation case against Sy Tho, Wang Tha Ti, Chin Na Chua and Chen Chien, who were arrested on August 30, 2006 while allegedly manufacturing illegal drugs in a shabu laboratory in Dingalan, Aurora.

Chy said the BI had to dismiss the deportation case against them since the Baler, Aurora Regional Trial Court Branch 66 dismissed the drug charges against the four foreigners and the Court of Appeals also dismissed the petition for certiorari questioning the decision of the Baler RTC. by Lee  Ann P. Zambales gov says permits granted to mining firm »

BALER, AURORA – Zambales Gov. Amor Deloso and the provincial mining regulatory board (PMRB) approved on Tuesday the three small-scale mining permits (SSMPs) of the subsidiaries of the NiHAO Mineral Resources International Inc.

“We reinstituted its permits because it did not commit any violations,” Deloso said in a telephone interview on Wednesday to confirm claims by NiHAO chair Michael Defensor in a letter to the Inquirer.

Defensor, former secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, earlier corrected reports that cited some facts drawn from the company’s disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange. The firm is publicly listed.

The report said the subsidiaries of NiHAO “lost their mining and quarrying permits after the provincial governor (Deloso) cancelled all regulatory approvals.”

The report also quoted a disclosure statement saying “all pending applications for mining and quarrying permits were also denied by the provincial government.” By Tonette Orejas
