An American fugitive, long wanted by federal authorities in the United States for a string of fraud cases and money laundering, was arrested recently by Bureau of Immigration and National Bureau of Investigation agents.
Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan identified the suspect as Oscar de Leon Noblejas, 65, who was arrested last Tuesday in his residence at the Sta. Catalina Village in Dasmariñas, Cavite by joint operatives of the BI and the NBI.
Noblejas was arrested on the strength of a mission order that Libanan had issued upon request of the US Embassy in Manila which sought the bureau’s help in locating and arresting the fugitive.
Libanan said Noblejas had been hiding in the Philippines for 10 years since he fled the US to evade prosecution for his alleged crimes.
His capture should serve as notice to other foreign fugitives from justice who are hiding in the country that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them wherever they are and however long it takes,” Libanan said.
Libanan vowed that “we will never allow the Philippines to be used as a sanctuary by these foreign criminals.” By Sandy Araneta
